Studies have proven that houseplants can make you smarter, healthier and more productive. How is this possible? Well plants breathe in the opposite fashion that we do. We breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide and plants breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. This freshens the air and most importantly removes harmful air born toxins.
In fact, a study done by NASA shows that houseplants can remove up to 87% of air toxins in just 24 hours! This reason alone should motivate you to add some greenery to your household. But that’s not all! Studies have also proven that adding houseplants can increase concentration, productivity, reduce stress and boost your mood! All that from plants?! Imagine if all those benefits came from a pill. It would be the next billion dollar pill. Thankfully, mother nature has our backs. Here are some more of the amazing benefits you can experience from adding plants to your home or office:
1.They Make You Happier
The more you surround yourself with greenery the happier you will be. Research suggests that plants have a positive effect on stress reduction, pain tolerance, and physical discomfort. In fact, when satillite data was compared to a survey of 2,500 Wisconsinites in 229 neighborhoods, it showed that people living in areas with 10% or less tree canopy had more depression, anxiety and stress than those living in greener areas. And economic conditions were taken into consideration and showed that wealth was not a factor. Poorer residents in greener areas were, in general, happier than richer ones in treeless areas, says the study in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.
2.Natural Air Filters
When we spend a lot of time indoors we breathe the same air again and again which can be harmful. Plants filter our air by breathing in our toxic air and producing clean oxygen for us to breathe. A study done by NASA in the 1980’s shows that certain plants will even filter harmful pollutants such as formaldehyde, benzene, and ammonia from the air. To freshen your stale air, try some of these air-scrubbing horticultural superheros: Boston fern, English ivy, spider plant, bamboo palm, weeping fig, flamingo lily, peace lily, and cornstalk dracaena.
Research shows that houseplants can give your immune system a nice boost. Because plants are so good at filtering out toxins from our air, they keep our air clean and fresh which helps us to stay healthy. Also, plants are excellent at increasing moisture in the air.
4.They Make You More Productive
Houseplants can have a dramatic effect on your productivity levels. Being “under the influence of plants” can increase memory retention up to 20 percent, according to a University of Michigan study. According to Texas A&M, “work performed under the natural influence of ornamental plants is normally of higher quality and completed with a much higher accuracy rate than work done in environments devoid of nature.”
5. Increase Learning
Recent studies show that adding our green friends to our schools and workplaces can enhance our ability to learn new information. In fact one study showed that simply by adding three plants per classroom, student increased their performance 10-14%. I don’t recall any plants in my classrooms when I was in school! In a study to be published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology, researchers show that the mere presence of plants in an office setting boosts one’s ability to maintain attention.
Plants make a fantastic addition to your home or office and will improve both your physical and emotional well being. We humans evolved on this planet surrounded by plants. They are apart of our very nature and we are forever connected. Our modern age has removed us from our natural environments and we haven’t had time to evolve to the change. There for, to maintain a healthy mind and body reintroduce some plants into your surroundings. They will improve your life and the lives of your loved ones.
